Rebuilding New Orleans post Katrina

ABSTRACT:

The social network that surrounds garage rock music in New Orleans, Louisiana, rebounded relatively quickly and easily from the effects of hurricane Katrina.  this paper explores how the garage rock scene was able to recover, and describes its social networks as a form of social capital that proved robust in the wake of this horrific disaster.  First, I describe the density and strength of the garage scene that developed in New Orleans before Katrina.  Next, I explain how the characteristics of the garage scene were adapted to rebounding from the hurricane.  The final section emphasizes that business centers were highly valued in the minds of the scene members before and after the storm.
